The Phosphorus and Potassium Fertilizer Value of Two Poultry Litter Sources Used for Flood-Irrigated Rice

Few studies have examined the use of poultry litter as an alternative to inorganic P and K fertilizers for flood-irrigated rice. The objective of this study was to compare fresh and pelletized poultry litter to inorganic P and K fertilizers to document the availability of P and K in poultry litter. Inorganic P and K fertilizers, fresh broiler litter, and pelletized litter were preplant-incorporated at five rates from 0 to 150 lb P2O5 and K2O/acre. The P concentration and content of whole rice plants were used to determine the P and K fertilizer value of the two litter sources in comparison to triple superphosphate and muriate of potash at three growth stages during the season. In general, P and K application rate had the greatest influence on the P and K concentration and content of rice during the growing season. The preliminary data suggest that the P and K in poultry fresh and pelletized poultry litter are equal to that of the common inorganic fertilizers when applied at similar rates.
